Today, Atlanta United Football Club, FOX Sports South and FOX Sports Southeast formally announced that Alan Green, the lead commentator for BBC Radio Sport, will join the club’s broadcast team for the final remaining 14 matches of the 2017 season. Previously, Kevin Egan of beIN Sports handled the play-by-play duties alongside Dan Gargan and Brittany Arnold. Green will join color analyst Dan Gargan and studio host and sideline reporter Brittany Arnold for the FOX Sports Southeast broadcast of Atlanta United’s match vs. Columbus Crew SC on Saturday, June 17. Coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET with Atlanta United LIVE!
“I’ve been very fortunate in my career to have done play-by-play for many of the world’s most elite tournaments including World Cups, European Championship and European Champions League finals,” said Alan Green. “The opportunity to be a commentator for Atlanta United is extremely exciting for me and I’m looking forward to the new experience. I’ve been watching the club’s early season matches from England and can’t wait to join the broadcast team for my first match later this month.”
Alan Green is currently employed by the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) as a radio host, play-by-play announcer and commentator. He joined the BBC in 1982 and has been BBC Radio Sport’s lead commentator since 1990 hosting a variety of programs such as ‘6-0-6’, ‘BBC Match of the Day’ and the BBC World Service program, ‘World Football.’ Green has covered more than 115 major finals, seven World Cups, eight European championships and several UEFA Champions League Finals. Alan recently called the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final between Juventus and Real Madrid in Cardiff, Wales on Saturday, June 3rd.
“We are grateful to Kevin for his brilliant work calling the first five games of our inaugural season, and are excited to welcome Alan to our broadcast team for our remaining regionally televised matches,” said Atlanta United president Darren Eales. “Alan has an outstanding reputation as a leading radio and television host as well as a play-by-play commentator for major international tournaments. His diverse experience will allow him to contribute a distinct point of view to our broadcasts.”
“Atlanta United may be a first-year MLS expansion team, but Atlanta soccer fans are knowledgeable and recognize they have a world class team in every regard from the players, coach Martino, Mr. Blank’s ownership and leadership, and match telecasts,” said Jeff Genthner, senior vice president and general manager of FOX Sports South. “Kevin Egan did an exceptional job calling our Atlanta United telecasts to this point in the season, and we are now very excited to welcome world-renowned match commentator Alan Green to our FOX Sports regional telecasts.”
Following the Atlanta United season, he will continue his work with BBC Sport, returning to England in late fall.
