Blazers shutout the Tigers

UAB Football

What a way to kick off the college football season! Undefeated, a shutout game & fans everywhere to celebrate the win! UAB starts the season 1-0 and their fans were excited about the start of the season. Thursday night the Blazers played against Savannah State Tigers and beat them 52-0. Now before you judge this as just a blow out game against another HBCU team know that the Blazers athletic program really worked hard to provide the ultimate fan experience for everyone at Legion Field.

Mayor Woodfin was present to do the coin toss and he was the best dressed man in the stadium. Check out his green pants!

There were dance cams & other cams that really engaged the fans and the #EyeSpy cam was my favorite. During the game penalties hurt Savannah State early in the game, but this was all practice for their next game against Miami. Yes, I said Miami.

Savannah State will travel to play against University of Miami and in 2020 UAB is scheduled to play the Hurricanes. “We’re excited about the addition of UAB to our schedule for 2020,” Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Strawley said. “We are always striving for a competitive nonconference slate to complement our ACC schedule.”

The most exciting thing about the game was meeting the Melbourne Central Catholic high school football team. Melbourne Central Catholic High School told me it was passing through Birmingham and shot their shot by asking for tickets to Thursday night’s match up. UAB granted them all-access and the team had a blast. They ended up on Legion Field’s big screen and you can just tell that this was the highlight of the game for them. The team was traveling to Corinth, Mississippi for a matchup on Friday night.

What a great offensive start for the Blazers and their team looks to have another successful season.
