Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is $100 million richer.
The Falcons announced today that they extended Ryan’s contract five more years, and made him the first NFL quarterback to earn $30 million per year. He also will get $100 million guaranteed.
Ryan, who will turn 33 on May 17, was entering the final year of a five-year, $103.75 million extension that he signed in 2013, according to ESPN.
Owner Arthur Blank told ESPN that Ryan would be “compensated well” after being named NFL MVP and helping the Falcons to the Super Bowl during the 2016 season.
“Matt is getting what he has earned and we all know the marketplace for a great quarterback,” Blank said Thursday. “League revenues are up, club revenues, new stadiums and the players are the heart of the game. They’re the ones on the field and they certainly deserve their fair share.”
Ryan has thrown for 41,796 yards during his career with 260 yards and 126 interceptions while completing nearly 65 percent of his passes. He is currently seventh among all active quarterbacks in career passing yards and eighth in passing touchdowns. He is 16th in career passing yards among all quarterbacks in NFL history, surpassing Hall of Famer Joe Montana earlier this season, and 18th in career passing touchdowns.
