Georgia Southern basketball played long-time rival Appalachian State Saturday night. The Eagles came in the game with a six game winning streak on the line. Also the Eagles came into the game first in the SunBelt. Sophomore guard Tookie Brown scored a season high 32 points, two points off his career high. He was 17 of 23 from the free throw line and 7 of 16 from the field while leading the Eagles to a 92-88 victory. Brown likes playing Appalachian State, he had a career high 34 against them a year ago. Another sophomore guard Ike Smith added 25 points, going 9 of 12 from the free throw line. The Eagles won this game on the free throw line. Overall the Eagles made 34 out of 47 from the free throw line. The Eagles have now won seven in a row, making them 6-0 in conference play. The Eagles haven’t won seven in a row since 2011-2012.
Next up is second place Coastal Carolina Monday the 23rd. This is Coastal Carolina’s first season in the SunBelt, they have a conference record of 4-2. This is the first time the two teams have faced each other since 2009. Coastal Carolina is coming off a 20 point lost to Georgia Southern’s in state rivals Georgia State. Georgia Southern has never beat Coastal Carolina, the all-time series record is 4-0 Coastal Carolina. Hopefully the Eagles can change that this year since the two teams will meet again for a second time later this season. Coastal leads the SunBelt in total rebounds and rebounds per game, while Georgia Southern has the top two leading scores in the SunBelt. This game should be an interesting one. Hopefully Georgia Southern can keep the winning streak going.
Hail Southern and No Place Else!
